I have been listening to some different stuff than usual recently. I have been really into the minimal electro stuff. New Kings of Leon!

Kings of Leon is a great indie rock band that hit it big with there album Aha Shake Heartbreak in 2005, which featured some great tracks like soft and milk. They followed that up with a new album last year called because of the times. On August 2nd Kings of Leon put out there new single crawl and followed it up by putting out another single called sex on fire exactly one week later. Here are the two new tracks posted, crawl is ok most of there tracks are usually better, but I really like sex on fire.

Look for the new album called Only By The Night set to come out September 23rd.

Yummmm! Intros!

An introduction is an essential part to any album. An intro can cover anything as it could be a skit, dialogue, monologue, freestyle, sample, or even a full-length song. The introduction to an album is just like an appetizer to a meal. In some cases, the appetizer can be a preview of what's to come. If the appe is delicious then you anticipate the main course and following dishes to be even better. Sometimes the appetizers are anything but appetizing and that can ruin an entire dining experience. Similarly, album intros can (and almost always do) set the tone for the rest of the CD. So, whether it's a culinary or musical introduction, make sure to treat your tastebuds and eardrumz equally well. Enjoy these intros and opening tracks!

An all time favorite intro song and must-hear, "Be" from Common's album Be.

Max M. ILL rips it for 5+mins on this hot intro. Max sticks to his style and everytime I listen to this track I find a new "Damn!" line (future post idea!!!).

Listen to the samples in the background of this creative intro from Biggie's classic Ready to Die.

On Nas' Illmatic the intro is called "The Genesis" and it features Nas' debut verse found in this Main Source song. Nas was 16 when he ripped this.

Groove Armada Keeps It Going

Many of you recognize the band Groove Armada as the 90's band that had all of you singing "I See You Baby, Shaking That Ass." They are one of the few 90's bands still around and have just dropped a new album Soundboy Rock and it's dopeeeeeeeee. The first track is "The Girls Say" and it features the talented Rhymefest. The next track is a smooth track that has a nice feel to it. "Feel The Same" is def a nice track to drop in a lounge and it features Angie Stone on the vocals. Go out and buy the album!!!!!!!! I have to post the youtube clips because itunes won't let me post the songs I just bought...lame!! And EarDrumZ loves Shane.

New Roots Track & Album

Many of us were on vacation, so I apologize for that shitty week of no posts. Hopefully this week makes up for it. The Roots new album "Rising Down" is set to release April 29th. It will be their tenth album and has been described to be darkly funky, politically charged, and filled with special guests. One track that has been gaining a lot of popularity has been their track "Birthday Girl", probably because of the collaboration with Fallout Boy front man Patrick Stump. At first I was skeptical when hearing that they were collaborating, but I actually like the track it is pretty catchy.

Yo, I'm back! I havn't posted in a while since I've been real busy with a crazy semester, but this weeks post is good. I just started listening to LCD Soundsystem and I really like this band. They have a very original and distinct electronic sound. You've probably all heard there bigger hits like "Daft Punks playing at my house" and "North American Scum." However, I'm posting my two favorite songs "Tribulations" which has a sick upbeat sound and "Someone Great" which is a lot more chill. I Got Tired of Being Sexy

Cansei de Ser Sexy, also known as CSS, is an interesting hot Brazilian band from Sao Paulo. They have a electro-rock-funk-new wave vibe and the lead singer has a high pitched catchy voice. You probably are all somewhat familiar with the single "Music is My Hot Sex" featured in the iPod touch commercial as well as a lesser known Zune music player commercial the previous year. CSS is also featured in the video game FIFA 08 with the song "Off the Hook" (a personal favorite from the game's elcectic playlist). The band's humorous name is translated from Portugese as "I got tired of being sexy". I chose to post about this band because of the numerous ways CSS relates to my life. They're from Brazil where, my favorite sport, football (soccer) is life. They were featured in, my current football game of choice, FIFA 08. We both have been tired of being sexy for quite some time. Also, we share a passion for music. CSS and I share some common ground, so maybe you'll discover a connection with the group too. (Check out the 'stache in the far right of the title pic).

At EarDrumZ we are always on the lookout for independent artists. I love hearing new and different sounds all the time and one of the best ways to do this is through online music players. Recently, thanks to the VIRV.TV blog, I discovered a great one called The SixtyOne: A Music Adventure. The banner for the61 reads, "radio sucks, so let's do something about it". This music player site is dedicated to the independent artist as it provides a place for everyone to be heard. Artists of all genres are welcome to upload their music to the61 and listeners vote and bump the songs onto or off of the "playlist of democracy". Anyway, I was elated when I came across this domain, looking forward to inflicting fresh harmonious rhythms and rhymes upon my semi-experienced eardrums. As much as I listen to all genres of music, my favorite category to explore the underground/indie scene is hip-hop. So, naturally that's what I checked out first. Long heard rumors are finally true, they'll play a series of midwest colleges hitting Purdue and IU and smaller venues. Death is something that is experienced way too often in the rap game. So many great emcees have fallen over the years. We all know about the legends who've passed but this post is gonna focus on three legends who died around this time of the year. February 15, 1999 Big L was shot and killed in his hometown Harlem streets. L left us at the age of 24. Feruary 7, 2000 Big Pun died of a heart attack at age 28. March 9, 1997 The Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down in LA at just 25. Although I could go on to write an extensive overview of the shortened careers and lives of these hip-hop greats, I just want to leave you with some tracks that I think represent and embody all that these artists tried to accomplish. RIP...we can only hope that your music will continue to influence and inspire while paving the way for new talented artists to become future legends.

Erykah Badu is back and better than ever. I missed her big afro and funky voice. Her album oozes soul, beautiful rifts, societal protest and marijuana (mm). I would best describe her new album as lauryn hill meets radiohead. Besides a jazzy, hip hop, sultry vibe this album still screams Badu circa 1990s, which is a always good. I recommend sitting (high or not) and listening... you will truly be liberated.

That Pittsburgh Sound

Last year Nas came to Pittsburgh and played a show at the Fitzgerald Field House. This event was highly anticipated as being "the shit" on my behalf but, sadly, did not live up to the hype. Surprisingly, I was one of very few "Nas-heads" at the venue. The atmosphere was dull when Nas performed and I was almost alone in a audience of about 250, rapping every word to every song. Unfortunately, Nas' bit wasn't that live and I think I knew more lyrics than he did. I do feel like it would've been a great show if the crowd was better, but as an MC it's your duty to get the crowd moving and keep 'em listening. (Listen: Eric B. & Rakim's "Move the Crowd" (Below) and also Lord Finesse's "Keep the Crowd Listening"(Not Posted Here)).

The majority of people at the concert were there to support opening act and hometown hero, Wiz Khalifa. Wiz has gained some minor fame outside of the burgh with his hit single "Say Yeah" and a few other releases. Wiz gave a solid performance at the Pitt show and impressively had the crowd more hyped than the veteran Nas. So, for all those who don't know about this cat, check out my second favorite artist from the 412, Wiz Khalifa.

I'm feeling really good today. It's probably because it's a beautiful sunny day and my iPod (which I keep on shuffle) has been on fire, playing great song after great song. Here are some tracks from very different backgrounds. A solid remix, a very unique new-wave instrumental, a classic hip-hop track, a hard old school rap track, and a nice feel good song/video. Hopefully, any one of these songs will put you into a really good mood too. A while back EarDrumZ posted a Ratatat remix of Kanye West's "Get 'Em High". Here's a small sample of some more Ratatat. Any Biggie fan will like this one.

As most of you know my full first name is Nima. At first it was cool having a unique name and all, and then that fucking fish (you know which one) came out, and since then I have had to deal with hearing "NEMO!!! LIKE THE FISHH" every time I introduce myself at a bar/party/ or anywhere else. I thought my life sucked then.....now just as I was developing a little alias with my djing name "NimZ", I discover later this year a new movie with that girl from Little Miss Sunshine is coming out, and get this it's called Nim's Island. All I can say is why me???

JEM: What are you trying to accomplish with your sound?
Max: I feel like we can all agree that hip-hop is really hurting right now. Basically, I want to be part of the movement bringing creativity and lyricism back to the game. Im trying to make music that people can jam toand have a good time, but at the same time get absorbed in the lyrical content and be like “damn that was dope! did you hear what he just said?”I dont want people to get my whole song in the first listen. Obviously I want them to like it the first time they hear it, but I want it to take you like 9 or 10 times until you really appreciate it, and then even moretimes until you really hear everything I said. I have this one dude thati work with that comes in every day we work together and he’ll quote a newline that he noticed that he hadnt noticed the first time around, and that shit makes me smile. I put a lot of effort into writing my verses, so i think people should put a lot of effort into hearing what i have to say even if im just spitting some off the wall bullshit punchlines, it's still gonna be hot.

J: Who are your major influences, both musically and in life, that contribute to the music you make?

M: In life, I have to say that ive been through a lot. I saw a lot of family members fall at a young age. Two of my close uncles who I looked up to so much died before i graduated high school, one when i was in 6th grade(cancer) and the other when i was in 10th grade (unknown circumstances ofthe heart, it just stopped one day). They are my angels and i knowthey’re lookin down and smiling at me now seeing what im doing with music. I also came from nothing. I wasnt dirt poor, but by no means was my family rich. Ive had to work for everything ive ever had, and ive been anearner since I could stand on my own two. My parents divorced when i wasin the first grade and I became somewhat of the man of the house when iwas still just a boy. Dont get me wrong, I look up to my dad so much. Hes an artist and an art professor and one of my greatest inspirations, but as a kid, you always blame yourself for shit like that. I love my family though and my brothers and my friends, they are my life, my motivation to keep it pushing with the music.
Musically, I learn from anyone and everyone. I mean, obviously I respect the lyrical cats the most, but I draw from all types of artists. Right now if you wanna learn how to make a hit or do a hook, you gotta look at T-Pain, dude is doing is thing major. Im big on Jay-Z, Nas, Em clearly being a white rapper with the same initials (its no coincidence trust me haha)...Big L, Tupac and Big of course, Rakim. Currently I pump a lot of Weezy, I love the Clipse and Re-up, Common, Kanye, and Lupe are keepin the creative shit alive. I mean as much as music is falling in some ways, it's changing and adapting and its great to try to jump into the game at this point. Oh yea, and my cousin Sean Poe, I can't forget him. He taught me everything i know rhyming as a youngin' and please believe that if I make it, he’s comin' with me.

J: How long have you been rhyming and when did you realize your lyrical ability was dope?
M: I've been rhyming since the 6th grade, at Greenway Middle School lunch tables. I went to a predominantly african-american school so most of my friends were black, and to fit in, I felt like I had to hoop and I had to rap. So I forced myself to do both. I remember one time we were all spitting and I got put on the spot and had nothing, so I tried to bite an old Ludacris verse..I got called out and was so embarassed, from then on I swore i'd never get caught without a fresh rhyme. I realized I had some skill when I started flowin' in high school, droppin' silly mixtapes to cut up and performing talent shows and whatnot, people really started to like it and I got a decent fan base. Rap became the thing that people associated with me so I stuck with it and grew to love it. In college now ive honed my skills and I feel im at the top of my game right now, but I still have so much more room to grow.

J: Do you prefer to "freestyle" or write?
M: I prefer to write, cuz like I said, I put so much time and effort into my verses. When I write a verse, I want it to be perfect, like no waste of words whatsoever. Freestyling didn't come to me naturally. I really had to work at it, but ive improved a ridiculous amount since I started. Me and big cuz Sean would just sit for hours, playin instrumentals and goin backand forth. Now, freestylin' usually just happens naturally, i'll be at a party and someone will be like “yo that's that dude who can spit” and im all drunk rappin my ass off before you know it hahaha.
J: What sets you apart from the rest? In other words, what makes you worthlistening to?
M: The lyrics man, im never gonna come with any bullshit. I care too much about hip-hop to spit something weak about my clothes or my shoes or something like that...or some wack ass dance I made up. I mean, every rapper has to brag, but if im gonna brag about something, im gonna do it creatively and in a fun way. My style goes all over the place too. For the most part, I stick to a certain way of laying it down, but if I hear the right beat or get the right concept in my head, I feel like I can do some really diverse things with my music. But yea, ultimately you gotta listen to what im sayin because thats what is gonna get you hooked on my shit.
J: How have you evolved as an artist since you got your start?
M: I've come such a long way. I listen back to some of my old mixtapes andread some of my old rhymes and I feel like Nas on that "Book of Rhymes" song, like “damn, I really wrote this bullshit?” haha. But seriously, I feel like im evolving and getting better with the flow every day. The more i rap, the better i get. Some of the things i spit now seriously amaze ME. Theres a lot goin on in my brain and im finally starting to learn how to take all those crazy thoughts and put them down to a beat to make an ill track.
J: When making a mixtape, what samples do you look to use and why? Any specific style, sound, or artists?
M: I'm just about what sounds hot to me. I mean of course I consider what would make a good song, but in the end, its what my ear likes the most, and I feel that my fans will trust my judgement on that. Its funny cuz sometimes people will hear a track and say “that beat was sick, who is your producer?” and im thinkin, "Wait you never heard that actual track before?". So then they remember me for it, and the original song never even exists for them. It's like Wayne with his mixtapes, dude will take some ofthe hottest beats out and totally rip them, embarassing the cat who was originally on it, and then when that beat comes on, people think of Weezy and not the original artist. That Mr. Jones track...its hard for me to even recall what Mike Jones said on that shit, but Weezy..."THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!” People dont forget if you give them the truth. So that's what I really try to accomplish when I put out a mixtape, forget that these arent my beats, just dig the song and remember me for it, cuz I guarantee that im gonna spit somethin just as good if not better than the original artist.

J: What drives you to make music?
M: My love for it. I absolutely love hip-hop man, I can't even describe it in words really. When I see people singing my songs or when I am on stage and fans are getting live, or even if im just spitting for a couple people and my man’s beatboxing or something, I am in another world. Im in heaven. I do it for the love, cuz at the end of the day, if I dont make a penny off of this rap game, im still gonna be rapping. I'm not in this shit for the cash, although thats obviously what im pushing for, but I cant think of anything else I want to do with my life at this point. I used to be so confused about my future but it's so clear to me now. I want to dedicate every day to music, and it would be nice to be able to live off of that, you know? Like I said before, my family, friends and brothers are a huge motivation. I do it for them because they want me to make it so bad and they believe in me so much. My parents raised me so well and I want to be able to take care of them and pay them back in the long run. I'm in a fraternity at the University of Pittsburgh, Tau Epsilon Phi, and those boys hype me like none other. They gave me the nickname The Future, they’ve been pushin my shit from day one. It's the fact that everyone else believes in me that allows me to believe in myself, even though I've known that I've had talent since I picked up a mic.

J: How much would you say your environment growing up contributes to your style and what you write about?

M: Well I didn't grow up in the ghetto or anything, but I sure as hell went to school there, hung out there, had friends there, and seeing that kind of environment definitely effects your view on things. For me though, it wasn't like, now I gotta rap about totin’ a pistol and sellin drugs cuzthis is what I see on the streets and this is what my man got locked up for. No. I learned that the street lifestyle doesnt pay off. Out of my six best friends leaving 8th grade, not one of them graduated high school with me. Two got locked up..two dropped out to sell drugs..one went MIA and nobody heard from him again and one left the state. Thats crazy. I hate the fact that so many kids feel like it's their only option, but it's understandable to an extent when you see that environment. For me, it was like, “get the fuck out and never look back” and I did. I'm in college, I'm working on a degree in Creative Writing, I'm trying to do as many positive things in my life as I can. Do I regret that I came up how I did? Hell no. It made me real. It taught me that you gotta get it however you can and nobody is gonna hand anything to you, in fact most people will try to take what you have or what you are trying to get. I am so much more proud to come from a bit of a rough background than to have that silver spoon in my mouth. I meet so many kids in college now that get checks from mommy to pay rent and pay for food and pay bills. Me? I work five days a week to pay for everything myself. My moms amazing and bends over backwards to do anything she can, but she can only do so much and thats why I gotta make it and I gotta take care of her. Plus, im going to college on loans man, haha, and this tuition shit aint no joke. Im coming out of this bitch owing tens of thousands of dollars, I need to make it hahahaha. I’ll never forget where I came from though. Like I said, it made me who I am, and I am proud as hell of who that man is.

J: What does the future hold for you?

M: The future holds unlimited possibilities for me. I know I'm gonna make it. I have too much talent and way too much determination not to. This is what I want to do with my life and im going to make it happen. Whether I get signed or whether I do it on my own, which honestly is looking like more and more of a reality every day...I got this dude making beats for me now that are insane, the guy is crazy with it and nobody else has ever even heard him or touched one of his beats cuz he's up and coming to. My future is definitely bright man, Im shining right now, and I dont plan on lettin' that fade for a loooooooonng time. Im like the sun, im not burnin' out any time soon, shit if anything im just gettin hotter. If Al Gore discovers some kinda correlation between me spittin' rhymes and globalwarming, I wouldn't even be surprised hahaa. I'm goin' to the top though, thats what my brother Ian tells me every day, "We are going to the top bro." And he's right. So when I'm up there, and everyone reading this shit is like, “damn I read an interview with him before he was anybody at all” I just want you to know that I got more love for you than you can ever imagine. Jake, thank you for the chance to do this, and everybody who took the time to get to know me a bit, I appreciate that. You coulda been anywhere in the world but you were here with me, haha. Please support the music, cuz you’ll be upset you didn't if I get a hit, haha. THE FUTURE IS HERE!!!

I think everyone agrees that Nas, his wife Kelis (who was looking fine that night), and the other ladies that accompanied them on the red carpet grabbed everyones attention with their N**ger attire. When asked about it in a CNN interview, Nas goes on some rant that makes no fucking sense. He then proceeds to talk about preventing a president from abolishing black voting rights......yea hes fuckn crazy hahahaha. I came across this mixtape and thought it sounded pretty cool, so I gave it a listen. It is super exclusive in the sense that it was released 2/9/08 (this past Saturday). This is DJ Stanley Logan mixing a handful of Kanye classics with their respective original samples and some other songs. At first glance, this looked like a great idea, an instant hit in the heart of any Kanye fan. After a good and long listen I found myself really feelin' most of the tracks (some are a little drawn out). It's a lot of fun to listen to if you are a Kanye-head and also if samples interest you. Most of the original songs are great by themselves and are showcased on this tape. This mixtape is special in the sense that you get almost a sneak peak into Kanye's head and production process by hearing the samples and hits played together. Samples include: Michael Jackson, Estelle, 2pac, Lauryn Hill, Steely Dan, Colin Munroe, Curtis Mayfield, Clipse, and even a couple more. Good listen from start to finish, although I liked the 2nd half of the CD better. 10 tracks total. He's an unsigned D.C. rap artist, with his name standing for, "We Aint Like Everyone".
Wale, true to his name, isn't like many other rap artists. He's not afraid to rap about topical material which a lot of artists stay away from these days. Being a contributer to the rap game since 2005, Wale has been around long enough to know that his time to make his breakthrough is coming very soon. In 2007 Entertainment Weekly named Wale as one of the artists to watch for in 2008. He's already made waves in rap when he teamed up with heavy hit-maker Lil Wayne in Nike Boots, which I posted earlier.

I dig this guy though. He's refreshing in this slump of mediocre hip-hop we've been hit with lately. I came across his song W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. today. This song makes me excited to see how this artist is going to grow 2008.

We Got the Jazz

Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, DizzyGillespie, John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock are just a few of my favorite and most listened to artists. What do they all have in common besides the blatently obvious fact that they are all famous and influential jazz musicians? Well, they all helped pave the way for the very hip-hop music we all listen to today. Yes people, the "help" I refer to is in the form of samples. Samples are an extremely important part of modern music especially in hip-hop. In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or element of a new recording. But, i'm sure you already knew that. Samples are taken from almost every style of music and are often used because of the influence the original song had on the sampling artist. Jazz is particularly popular along with soul, funk, and motown in hip-hop-sampling. One album that particularly stands out to me because of the abundance of free flowing lyrical ability and groovy jazz samples is A Tribe Called Quest's, The Low End Theory. As much as this album and group gets talked about on this website I cannot tell you how much the Tribe's use of jazz-based beats continues to leave me in a state of pure tranquility while also getting me hyped with its hard and true lyrics (Butter and Scenario). That's kind of how I feel about jazz as a whole. Jazz has power to calm me as if in a deep state of meditation, help me focus, and relax while also pumping me up sometimes. Other notable artists who also dig the jazz include Common, The Roots, De La Soul, Little Brother, Nas, Jay-Z, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and The Pharcyde. Of course the list of MCs who have used various jazz samples goes on and on and the use of jazz samples is not restricted to hip-hop. Any favorite artists of yours that are jazz-oriented, lemme know and drop me a line.

This is from my favorite album of all time, yes I know, a bold statement, but it's true. Sample from Ahmad Jamal's "I Love Music". This original was also used by Jeru the Damaja.

Another Ahmad Jamal sample belongs to another banger and personal favorite, Jay-Z's "Feelin' It". Chicago native Common also has used Ahmad Jamal in sampling for his song "Resurrection".

All time favorite jazz beat from my main man Herbie Hancock. I love this instrumental. Cool to throw on just chillin' out but also a SICK freestyle beat. Check it out.

The Scuba Doo allows you to basically ride a scooter underwater. Hopefully when I get mine I wont look like as big of a doofus as this girl. Regardless, I hope that you all will see me on one of those one day.

Chi Ali is the next artist on my old school throw-down. With him breaking into the rap scene at 14 years old, this song, is aptly named, Age Aint' Nothin But a Number. When you're 14, it certainly is. Mayyyybbbeeee this is why we saw him on America's Most Wanted in 2001 for the murder of his then girlfriend's brother. Ironically he's now serving a 14 year sentence.... age may not be a number Chi Ali, but your jail sentence certainly is.

I came across a one "DJ-ZTrip" the other day and found him taking this rather unknown Nirvana song "Lounge Act" and taking it to new heights. Live from Miami

So the other day I'm chillen in my car with nothing to listen to, I pop on an old CD laying around the back, its a live set from the Miami Winter Music Conference in '05. What better to get you pumped for a long day then some good old house tracks? The set was put together and hosted by Gabriel and Dresden, in case you are not familiar with them they are a sick DJ duo from San Fran that I'll prob do a feature on one week. Anyway, some of the tracks were just real sick and I figured I'd have to post em up this week. So for those of you that love that crazy progressive trance, house type shit here are some solid beats you can really feel.

This first track is one of my all time favorites from Mark Schulz. It starts off a little slow, but trust me give it to about the 2:30 mark and u'll see how dope it is. It also ends real nice and smooth so listen to this a few times all the way through and you'll like it trust me.

Deep Dish

Ali "Dubfire" Shriazinia and Sharam Taeyebi, better known as Deep Dish, make up a dynamic duo who have been rockin the house and dance scene since 1998. These two Persian DJ's from Washington D.C. first broke through with their album Junk Science in 98' and have been representing American music on the international dance scene ever since. Deep Dish is one of the most well known names in progressive house winning a Grammy in 2002. Currently they are working on a new artist album that should debut in about a year. If you like listening to a lot of progressive house you will really appreciate these tracks. The first two tracks I posted are off their most recent album George is on.

Droppin The Cool....

As you should all know, Lupe Fiasco dropped his most anticipated album yet, "The Cool," yesterday. After listening to this album numerous amounts of times, I must admit it lives up to all the hype. Just like Lupe's previous album this one has many tracks on it and is very solid from top to bottom. I'd go as far as saying this is the best hip-hop album of the year. This albums got it all from the typical upbeat catchy tunes Lupe throws down to his more poetic low-key tracks. My favorite tracks on the album are probably Paris, Tokyo and Fighters. Def go out and snag this one.

I was introduced to Kenna a number of years ago, when I saw their video for "Freetime" (Which is a sick video). Their new album dropped in October, but to be honest I was not the biggest fan. I came across their video to the song "Say Goodbye to Love" theother night , and it was tighttttt. The song is awesome and I couldn't believe I didn't notice it when I gave the album a listen. The song was produced by the neptunes and has a nice feel to it. The video is awesome and was directed by the great Hype Williams. Enjoy!

The Avalanches are a electro/house group from Melbourne, Austrailia. They are best known for their wild live dj sets. They have all been working together since 1997 and their debut album "Since I Left You" was derived of over 3,500 vinyl samples from various artists. My favorite song by them is "Ray of Zdarlight", it is a remix of a Digitalism song. I love dropping this track at the beginning of nights, because it gets the crowd going. As of now The Avalanches had many members at one time, but now consist of just 3 memebers.

Collie Buddz

Personally, I'm not a fan of reggae or reggaeton music. I think its too bland for the most part, however I was just listening to this new guy named Collie Buddz. Something about his style of reggae was different that caught my attention. None of that sean paul pop shit, this guy definitely has his own original style. I think Collie Buddz who's from Bermuda is going to be the next big thing in raggae music. Below I posted two of his songs which I really like. The first is called "Come Around," this is his big single, and then I posted "Blind to You" a song with a real nice low-key flow.

Yo, at the request of the pioneer of this magnificent blog, Nima "The Persian Version" Zahedi, I have decided to submit my own thoughts to what will one day go down as a piece of cultural and literary history. On that note, in similar fashion to my boy JRO, Hip Hop is what I will be addressing. As a student at the University of Pittsburgh, yeh the Pitt that just bomblasted WVU, I find that very few are as in tune to the wide array of hip hop styles and artists as I. Coming from NYC, Hip Hop is an art form that is seemingly embedded in the culture of, as My Cousin Vinny once said, "youths" of the Tri-State Area. Though Hip Hop means different things to different people, I personally find that Hip Hop is an art form in similar fashion to the music of the Vietnam Era, similar to early forms of the Blues, similar to Harlem Renaissance era Poetry. Hip Hop is The TRUTH. It combines the Music of Nina Simone, James Brown, Michael Jackson, countless Jazz Musicians with the voice of struggle and revolution that has characterized the American identity. Really, is Hip Hop anything less than the purest American art form? Just as our Founding Fathers protested the oppression of the British Empire in the 18th century, just as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. protested the discrimination and racism endured by the African American community for much of this nation's history, just as college students protested the Vietnam War, Hip Hop MC's such as Chuck D, 2pac, Nas, KRS-One and others paint the picture, and in a most brutal fashion, of society's downfalls. Yet it is up to us, the people, to hear those words and find meaning the poetry of those MCs. So be real, and in the words of Da Mayor "DO THE RIGHT THING" I leave you with the genius that is Q, Phife, Jarobi and Ali aka A Tribe Called Quest. Peace.

Similar to Missy Elliott she puts an electronic twist on rap and more club like dance music. Her new album features hit song Paper Planes and other beats accompanied by rappers like Timberland. This Sri-Lankan, but British born, artist has already captivated clubs and listeners worldwide. From Europe to South America she has toured electrifying crowds all over and only recently becoming recognized in the U.S. Below I posted her most popular song thus far in the U.S. Paper Planes. Thunderheist

They've been quoted as having a "raunchy indie rap" sound by Spin magazine. Thunderheist consists of Isis (the MC) and Graham (the dj). They've been getting a lot of love in their native country and starting to make a name of themselves here. Ronson Re-Visits Bob Dylan

Sorry about the break from some new posts the holiday kind of messed up the flow of things. Anyway, we all know Mark Ronson came out with his album "Versions" earlier this year which was a collection of songs remixed by Mark, most of the time creating a funkier sound. Well, Mark's most recent project is the remix of a Bob Dylan classic "Most Likely You Go Your Way". Now it may not seem like a big deal, but Bob Dylan has never allowed anyone to remix any of his songs, so this is a first. Mark Ronson has built a great fanbase with all of his remixes, but there are many critics out there who believe his remixes ruin the original. I am a big fan of Mark Ronson's work, and think he definitley gave this Dylan song a nice funkier sound, but it is not the greatest remix i've ever heard. If you like the track then you should grab yourself a copy of "Versions" because many of the tracks have a simlar sound to this one.

Party Time!

So today's a special day since its a wednesday. Every wednesday yours truly will be posting some good shit as wednesdays will be declared Ash wednesdays. This week we'll look at one of the most talented DJ's around, and perhaps my favorite mash-up artist, Party Ben. This guy throws down some of the illest parties around but has been based out of club bootie in San Fran lately. Currently he's touring the club scene out in Europe, hopefully well catch em at a club back in NY soon. His site patyben.com features some sick hour long sets from some of his appearances out west and also an array of his remixes and mash-ups. Some of his more famous mash-ups have been played across the country at parties and on the radio, I'm sure most of you are familiar with his Green Day/Oasis mash-up called "Boulevard of Broken Songs" in 2004 and his more recently famous mash-up of Snow Patrol and The Police called "Every Car You Chase." However, below I put up my top four favorite Party Ben creations that would keep any party alive.

The first song is a personal favorite since it features a favorite White Stripes song "My Doorbell" and a rapping legend in Rakim. Here is "Pump my Doorbell" featuring The White Stripes, Erik B, and Rakim

Next I got up a remix of a previously done mash-up featuring Mylo and indie rockers Tegan & Sara called "Walking With a Ghost in Paris." Following is "Never Feel Good" a combo of a classic Cake song and the Gorrilaz, and finally, there is "Drop It Like It's a Whole Lott" a song combining the famous Snoop Dog song "drop it likes its hot" and Led Zeppelin.

C'mon Sagion

Straight out of NY, Saigon may owe some of his fame to the hit show Entourage, but he defnitley deserves it when he comes out with tracks like this one. This track "Cmon Baby" was produced by Just Blaze and features Swizz Beats. This track is going to be all over the clubs once if its not already. The video of the track has a little intro for like the first minute so be patient. I also posted a remix of the track below it feat. Jay-Z. Artist Spotlight: Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris is a british singer/songwriter/producer. His first complete album "I Created Disco" came out this summer in UK and September in the US, and it has taken him to new levels. He had a top 10 hit in the UK with "Acceptable in the 80's" , and now his song "The Girls" is reaching the ears of everyone . His unique style has been noticed overseas, but he has yet to reach that level in the states. Here are a couple tracks off his album as well as a jamiroquai remix he has released. Also look for him to be producing on a few Kylie Minouge tracks coming up.

"The Girls" is a great and fun track, really gets everyone going Check out the video at the bottom as well, its pretty cool.

D.A.N.C.E to the Hip-Hop

Justice's "D.A.N.C.E" is a great track and I've heard numerous remixes using it, but i've been waiting for some hip-hop artists to do something with this track considering it would be a sick sample to use.But finally I have come across a couple. First we have up and coming hip hop artist Wale doing his thing and the second one we have Mos Def and Spank Rock's version. I personally like the Wale version a little better it's a little more fun, but they are both tight tracks. Check em out!

Lupe Fiasco's sophomore album "The Cool" is set to drop around December. Lupe is set up to team up with The Neptunes, Kanye West, as well as Dan the Automator and more. His first single is set to be "Super Star" feat. Matthew Santos, who worked on a couple tracks on Lupe's debut album which earned three grammy nominations. If Lupe's album is anything like his first, it will be filled with some nice tracks. Enjoy the preview of the single.

The energy they brought was something i've never seen before. Recently released is the radio edit version of one of their live performances.
